About

Dr. Lucy Montgomery is a Vice Chancellor’s Research Fellow at the Australian Research Council funded Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Her work draws on the literatures of Law, Asian Studies, Economics and the Creative Industries. She is committed to producing rigorous research that engages with the needs of communities, policymakers and businesses in the twenty-first century.

Lucy graduated with First Class Honours in Asian Studies from the University of Adelaide before going on to complete her PhD at QUT in Brisbane, Australia in 2007. Her PhD, Governing a Copyright Culture in Post-WTO China, examined the role of copyright and the challenges of governance associated with the emergence of China’s commercially focused film and music industries in the wake of China’s entry into the World Trade Organization.  In 2008 Lucy acted as guest editor for the Chinese Journal of Communication for the special issue, China: Internationalising the Creative Industries, with John Hartley. This special issue has produced four out of the five most cited articles published by the journal, and Hartley and Montgomery’s own paper ‘Fashion as Consumer Entrepreneurship: Emergent Risk Culture, Social Network Markets and the Launch of Vogue, China’ currently ranks as the Chinese Journal of Communication’s most frequently cited paper.

Lucy’s work has been published in the International Journal of Cultural Studies, the Creative Industries Journal, the Chinese Journal of Communication and Industry and Innovation.  Her book, China’s Creative Industries: Copyright, Social Network Markets and the Business of Culture in a Digital Age, (Edward Elgar, 2010) is an outcome of her post-doctoral fellowship, which was funded by the Australian Research Council’s Federation Fellowship program.
