Thesis Title: A Dark New World: Anatomy of Australian horror films

About

Mark David Ryan is a Research Fellow in film/television for the Queensland University of Technology. He is one of Australia’s leading experts on Australian horror movies and genre cinema. His PhD thesis, titled A Dark New World: Anatomy of Australian Horror Films, was the first major study of the Aussie horror movie industry. He has since written numerous essays, journal articles, conference papers and feature articles on understanding Australian cinema through popular movie genres, and production studies’ approaches to film and genre analysis. His research has been published in New Review of Film & Television Studies, Media International Australia: Incorporating Culture and Policy, Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies, and Studies in Australasian Cinema, among others. His research interests include Australian film and horror movies, gothic film and literature, the horror genre, popular movie genres (action, science-fiction, thriller, crime etc), entertainment industries, next generation filmmaking, and cultural policy.
